H.E. Eric Walsh, High Commissioner of Canada in Sri Lanka has stated that the Government of Canada pays special attention on the implementation of official language policy in Sri Lanka and further they are ready to make agreements with Sri Lanka Government at any time with a view to assist for this purpose.
He expressed his views this morning at the special discussion held with Mr. A H M H Abayarathna, Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
Even though French language is the main language used in Quebec province of Canada, facilities have been made there for the recipients to use English language to obtain services. Both parties express their concern in implementing official language policy especially in public service delivery in Sri Lanka, which is a multilingual country.
Mr. AM H M Abayarathna, Minister pointed out that at present arrangements are now being made for recipients to obtain service in any language on their preference and the Ministry has paid attention to expand these processes adhering to the official language policy. Further he emphasized that the Government is intervening directly for the implementation of official language policy. He assured H E Walsh that in near future an efficient and effective public service devoid of language barriers for the benefit of the people. Accordingly, measures will be taken to ensure the implementation of official language policy through digitalization process in public service.
The discussion was turned towards a peaceful election process devoid of violence and corruption. On behalf of the Government of Canada, High Commissioner took this opportunity to extend his appreciation for making a background to hold elections without violence. The Minister has drawn attention of High Commissioner to the importance of empowering Provincial Councils Institutes. He pointed out that will be a great push to bring development process forward whilst streamlining the administration of the country.
Higher Commissioner appreciated the commitment and positive contribution of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government to implement official language policy and establish an election process devoid of violence.
Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government along with a group representing both parties participated in this event.
