Over 730,000 retired public servants celebrated the National Pensioners' Day on the 8th of this month. The national ceremony was held at the Pensioners' Holiday Resort in Wedamulla, Kelaniya, under the patronage of the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayaratne. This event was organized by the Department of Pensions. Addressing the ceremony, Minister, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayaratne stated that the contribution made by retired public servants towards building a modern country cannot be described in a day. He also pointed out that if it were not for the service they rendered as public servants, we might not have the country we live in today. The Minister also stated that the government will take action in the future to resolve the problems faced by the pensioners' community and added that steps will be taken to consider in the 2026 budget, the issues of the pensioners whose pensions were not increased in the 2025 budget.
A large group, including Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mr. Ruwan Senarath, Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. S. Alokabandara, Director General of Pensions, Mr. Chaminda Hettiarachchi, and senior officials of the Ministry, were present on this occasion.
