"City of Renaissance" – National Inaugural Ceremony in Badulla
The implementation of the program, “City of Renaissance” - Local Government Week 2025, conducted by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government with the aim of creating a city of renaissance that fulfills the needs of the community and safeguards the living environment under the theme "A rich country – a beautiful life" commenced on the 15th of September, covering 341 local government institutions across the island.
The national inaugural ceremony of this programme took place on the 15th of this month at the weekly fair premises, Meegahakivula, belonging to the Meegahakivula Pradeshiya Sabha in the Badulla district, which is the local government institution with the lowest income out of the total 341 local government bodies in the country, with the participation of the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, Minister of Plantations and Community Infrastructure, Mr. Samantha Vidyaratne, Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mr. Ruwan Senarath and Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mr. S. Alokabandara.
Programmes have been planned within this week as follows.
15th of September - Inauguration and Mobile Service Day
16th of September - Environment and Tree Planting Day (parallel to the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer)
17th of September - Health and Sanitation Day (Parallel to the World Patient Safety Day)
18th of September – Day for enhancement of income
19th of September - Day for promotion of literature, education and libraries (Parallel to the Literary Month)
20th of September - Public Utility and Sports Day (parallel to the World CleanUp Day)
21st of September - Awarding of Certificates and Closing Ceremony
Many government institutions, including the President's Office, Clean Sri Lanka Programme, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Urban Development, Construction and Housing, Ministry of Environment, Sri Lanka Police, Urban Development Authority, Mahaweli Authority, Urban Settlement Development Authority, Department of Forest Conservation, Condominium Management Authority, Marine Environment Protection Authority, Department of Agrarian Development, Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, the National Community Water Supply Department, and other ministries and departments, are supporting this programme. In addition, a large number of programs have been planned at the level of those institutions, parallel to the Local Government Week.
